History of Lancaster, Pennsylvania
The area that would come to be known as Lancaster began as a part of the Penn’s Woods Charter in 1681. The land in this charter, that had been given to William Penn by King Charles II, would later be split amongst various proprietors and laid out as individual towns. Lancaster was laid out by James Hamilton and named by John Wright. It was officially incorporated as a borough in 1742. Lancaster held the title of state capital in Pennsylvania from 1799 until 1812. At which time, the designation was given to the current state capital, Harrisburg. Lancaster’s population grew rapidly from the time of its initial incorporation. In 1818, it was incorporated as a chartered city, and in 1924, it was classified as a city of the third class.

Lancaster’s growth and development is largely attributed to its success in the agricultural industry. Known for its abundance of limestone soil, the Piedmont Region of Lancaster County has remained a source of economic prosperity throughout history. This limestone soil, more specifically called Hagerstown or Frederick loam, is what led to the area’s endless success in agriculture. The Piedmont was also found to hold various metals such as iron, copper, and silver. The introduction and further improvement of transportation routes like the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike, that ran along modern day routes such as Pennsylvania Route 340 and U.S. Route 30 Business, also had a major impact on the economy at the time. Such routes not only allowed for transportation of goods/products, but also opened up the city’s potential for tourism and related businesses. Today, Lancaster continues to thrive as a city of the third class with a unique variety of historical landmarks and bustling businesses to satisfy and entertain residents and visitors alike.
